I always hear the same complaints from friends and family … "My house feels old and boring. I had the same look for so years, but I have no money to go out and buy new furniture. "Well, I tell them, changing the look and feel is the easy part. Get off the couch to do something about is the question.
First off, my suggestion would be to buy decorating magazines as Elle Decor, Metropolitan Home, Vogue Living, Southern Accents and World of Interiors. I know what you think, "I can not afford what they show in these pages." But you can. You do not replicate what these designers do for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Use the images as an inspiration and a starting point off. Once you have the look you achieve, choose a room, one room at a time and sit a while. Notice how the sun strikes the walls, what light does the colors in the room. How Does It Make You Feel? Do you need to go lighter? Darker? Or somewhere in between? Color should be your first thought because it will change your mood immediately. I am a person very minimalist and have all white walls and very little furniture. Too many of my friends, it's cold, but I love her and that is what is most important. Do not decorate for your friends, Decorate for you and living with you.
Now that you have the color of your wall, check your furniture. Does it complement the color and space? Note that I compliment and said match. Matching things so nearly became a scene, a game where it almost becomes uncomfortable at home. By complimenting color, you open a universe of possibilities. I have no doubt that at least part of your furniture will still look great in space. For parts that are not, here are some suggestions: if a sofa or chair in question, simply slide the cover in a shade you like and that works. If this does not interest you, find a great pillows and other accessories like a jet and the floor mat that compliments the wall and press the rebel cabinet in this direction. If you really do not think the furniture works, I suggest going to garage sales and outlet stores to find interesting pieces that can become openers conversation at a time. I know you do not want to break the bank and you do not. I love Ikea because they show the drawings the 21st century are and I have absolutely no doubt that the furniture store has a great piece that works in a price range that makes you smile.
A Once you have the color of your room and furniture, search the rest of your house and change the pictures in each room. Just move a poster, photo or painting from one room to another will feel a newsroom. Remove some of the clutter that has developed past year and a day and store it. Can you live without it? I'm sure you can. Piece by piece, you get the look you want in a way that uses your existing furniture and collectibles without spending much money.
